What is Endodontics?
Endodontics is the branch of dentistry that deals with the inner tissues of the tooth, specifically the pulp and root canals. When decay, trauma or infection reaches the pulp, it can cause pain or sensitivity. Rather than removing the entire tooth, endodontic treatment aims to save it by removing the diseased tissue and sealing the canal.
What is a Root Canal Treatment?
A root canal treatment involves cleaning out the infected pulp, disinfecting the canal system and filling it with a biocompatible material. First, we assess the tooth using clinical tests and X-rays. Next, the infected pulp is gently removed using fine instruments. The canals are then irrigated to clear any remaining debris and shaped to receive the filling. Finally, the canal is sealed with gutta-percha and a sealer to prevent reinfection. Once complete, a permanent restoration (usually a crown) is placed to protect the tooth and restore its function.
With this approach, you can expect relief from discomfort and preservation of your natural tooth.
