The Hidden Reasons Young People Get Gum Disease and Cavities

At Drs Demajo Dental Clinics, we often meet young adults who feel frustrated and confused. They brush, floss, and even avoid sugar and yet they still get cavities or suffer from bleeding gums. Does this sound familiar?

If you’re young and healthy but struggling with bad teeth, tooth decay, or gum disease, you’re not alone and it’s not always your fault.

The two main types of dental problems

Most patients come to us with one of these two main issues:

  • Tooth Decay (Cavities): When bacteria eat away at your enamel, creating holes in your teeth.
  • Gum Disease (Gingivitis or Periodontitis): Infections and inflammation of the gums that can cause pain, bleeding, and even tooth loss if untreated.

Dentists often talk about poor oral hygiene being the cause and it often is. But not always.

Why you might still get cavities or gum problems (even if you brush)

Yes, brushing and flossing are essential. But other important factors can put even the cleanest mouths at risk which include:

  • Your Genetics: Some people are simply more prone to dental problems due to their DNA.
  • Weakened Immune System: Conditions like diabetes, HIV, and leukemia make it harder for your body to fight off gum infections.
  • Stress: While stress is often a common factor in challenging situations, it is no different for your dental health. Stress can weaken your immune system, dry out your mouth, and lead to teeth grinding.
  • Tobacco Use: Smoking or chewing tobacco damages your gums and increases your risk of cavities and tooth loss.
  • Diet: Sugary drinks, processed carbs, and acidic foods all contribute to decay and gum disease.
  • Dry Mouth: Caused by certain medications or conditions, and leads to less saliva your mouth’s natural defense.

If you’re brushing twice a day but still experiencing dental issues, remember that factors like brushing technique, overall health, lifestyle, and daily habits also play a major role in your oral health.

How you can protect your teeth (even if you’re at risk)

The good news is that most dental problems are preventable, even if you are generically more prone to them.

At Drs Demajo Dental, we have created a list of recommendations based on our experience with individuals who have struggled with cavities and gum disease:

  1. Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
  2. Floss every day (yes, it really makes a difference)
  3. Visit your dentist twice a year, or more if you’re at risk
  4. Avoid smoking and vaping
  5. Watch your diet, especially sugar and acidic foods
  6. Don’t ignore bleeding gums or pain
  7. Talk to your dentist about your medical history and risk factors

Real Case: How we helped one patient with severe gum disease

The below case study is a true story of one of our patients who approached us with severe gum disease.

A woman in her late 40s came to us worried about her front teeth. They had moved forward, looked longer than usual, and were starting to feel loose. She was in pain and scared that her teeth would fall out on their own.

After doing X-rays, we saw that she had severe bone loss around her teeth. This is a sign of advanced gum disease. Her gums needed deep cleaning under the surface (a procedure called deep scaling and root planing), done pain-free under local anesthesia by our experienced dental hygienist.

Unfortunately, the two front teeth were too damaged to save. We carefully removed them and placed dental implants with bone grafting on the same day. While her implants healed, she wore a temporary bridge so she could still smile and eat comfortably.

Four months later, her permanent ceramic crowns were placed, and her smile was fully restored. She now comes in for regular maintenance visits and her oral health is back on track.
